Java 7 is still some time away from its official release and you can still have a say as to what you would like to see incorporated into this upcoming release. Joseph Darcy writes about this initiative and the criteria behind it. One of the most important additions for Java 7 imho were closures. It really is a shame that it didn't make it. Although closures increase the complexity in the language, it helps to reduce the amount of clutter in systems: Anonymous innerclasses are a pain in the eye. So often they are 'upgraded' to normal inner classes or even normal classes. This causes a lot of noise in applications, imho more noise than closure syntax. It is a shame that language decisions at Sun are take by uninspired and unimaginative people. The platform is great but the language is getting really stale. -
