One of the most important additions for Java 7 imho were closures. It really is a shame that it didn't make it. Although closures increase the complexity in the language, it helps to reduce the amount of clutter in systems: Anonymous innerclasses are a pain in the eye. So often they are 'upgraded' to normal inner classes or even normal classes. This causes a lot of noise in applications, imho more noise than closure syntax. It is a shame that language decisions at Sun are take by uninspired and unimaginative people. The platform is great but the language is getting really stale.
