A new article on Java Developers Journal describes an important trend in application server architectures. If JSR 111 (The Java Services Framework) is taken to it's logical conclusion, it would be possible to plug in best of breed containers into open frameworks to build custom application servers. Currently only HP and Lutris have application servers built on this framework.

Seems similar to how JBoss uses JMX.
