I've been using Forte for Java ever since it was Netbeans and I love it. I'm currently using (And the rest of my company) the latest beta release which is build 1099j. You can get the stable released version at http://www.sun.com/forte/ffj/ce/index.html

or you can get the beta at eap.netbeans.com

Yes ! I have been using forte and it's the best that I have found. It's available for Linux/*x as well as windows.

I am sure you would like it. And best of all it's free !

Check also Inprise JBuilder Foundation. Currently version 3.5 is available at http://www.inprise.com/jbuilder/foundation/. JBuilder 4 will be available soon too.

I use the Enterprise edition, however I used to work with a free version for some while and it worked perfect for me.
