  1. An independent consulting company has presented a performance analysis of the publish/subscribe messaging throughput of FioranoMQ 7.5, SonicMQ 6.0, Tibco EMS 4.0 and IBM WebSphereMQ 5.3.

    The analysis provides a head-to-head comparison of these products designed to illustrate the products’ relative performance characteristics for several messaging scenarios. The test scenarios represent stress level conditions for real world applications.

    To save you the hassle of viewing the pdf - Fiorano is at least twice as quick as Tibco, Sonic and WebSphere for non-persistent messaging (doesn't mention other sorts of messaging). Doesn't mention SpiritWave, SwiftMQ or open source alternatives such as ActiveMQ or OpenJMs etc.

    Im not sure how relevant these types of benchmarks are - as there are so many different variables to take into account. For example, does the vendor enqueue messages at the client before asynchronously dispatching them to the broker (which can improve performance for certain tests), but isn't a good indicator of performance for when the messaging system is really deployed in the field.

    What about scalability, performance for large message payloads, reliability, recoverability ... the list can go on and on.

    Had to try from another machine to view the results. I don't know about other's, but I find the test rather simplistic. What ever happened to running series of benchmarks to establish the scalability of a system based on several factors. 1024 bytes is hardley conclusive of anything. I would think a series of tests using message size, publisher-to-subscriber ratios, varying publish rates and number of topics would paint a clearer picture of how the server performs under various conditions.

    Something like:
    1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 Kb messages
    1:1, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 16:1 publisher:subscriber ratio
    1, 10, 20, 50 topics
    100, 1000, 10000 messages per second

    Atleast, if I was building a system, that is the first thing I would do to get a baseline of how a JMS server performs. Then as I build the application, I can check against the benchmark and run spot tests.

    One client and one server? Right... that's what everyone does.

    Performance is one thing but nothing about scalability or reliability.

    Let's see a test on 4 (or 10) x dual node servers with 1000s of publishers and 100s of subscribers with some random dude pulling out network plugs.

    Anyone can build an application that sends messages from one machine to another.

    The lack of professional benchmarks gives good reason NOT to use this product.

    it makes me wonder if the test was laziness or bad methodology. A real developer would have atleast tried several different setups instead of what was used in the report. I take the comparison as a silly marketing joke. hopefully, that's not how they QA their product internally.

    I guess you all have gone through the report and seen the content to the fullest extent.

    I agree to a couple of points which you make here. What is interesting is none of you seem to realise that its not impossible to improve a product's speed based on the demands of the industry.

    I see the report makes claims of big names et all, but then just because the opponents are big is not reason enough to dismiss this report.

    As most of you agree, it is difficult to meet the expectations of every developer in the world as to what should be the ideal testing environment for any IT product. So instead of talking about what is not there, you need to discuss about what is there.

    I dont see any big difference between this report and those which other companies including the big guns come out with... Either way all companies would ideally want to get marketing material to project their positives and no one can come out with the ideal test suite given the complexities of middleware scenarios across business units worldwide.

    Overall, its another report by a company and thats how it should be taken. I did check out their website and find that it has got a couple of awards from some leading analysts and IT magazines.. I think that it is really a reliable company and is making progress in the past few years as can be seen in their website news section.

    So, on second thoughts, this report can be taken with the contents that exist therein. Fiorano is also on the Gartner quadrant and is labelled as a "visionary" product!!!

    So..who knows, their claims can be correct after all !!

    We wanted to choose a JMS broker for our real time financial application. The performance was a key in
    the choice.

    We have put in place a very complete benchmark and tested
    the most important brokers including Fiorano, SunMQ, SwiftMQ,
    WebsphereMQ, ..., for weeks. Our tests included the different types of messages and different message sizes.

    All I can say is that Fiorano is not the fastest one.
    We must be very carefull with their benchmarks because
    they are not fair in their approach. For example, in a
    previous benchmark they used persistent messages, but
    persistent messages are/were not implemented in Fiorano.
    As a result it compared persistent messages from other brokers with non persistent messages for Fiorano.

    We finally choosed SunMQ, it was as fast (and most of the time fastest) than the other brokers, free of charge, very easy to use, very easy to configure.

    Be prudent with these benchmarks

    Before we discuss more about the "Persistent" issue with Fiorano products, can you kindly let me know which version of FioranoMQ did you use for your testing exercise and possibly when??

    As I see it on their website, it is mentioned that FioranoMQ 7.5 is the latest version and they have this benchmark done for this version.

    Also, due to the lack of standardized testing scenarios in the IT industry, every company is bound to come up with their benchmark results. Its not just about Fiorano. It about the entire spectrum of the IT world. This is not an exception, this is the rule.

    You seem very knowledgeable about (and defensive of) Fiorano. I'm curious if you have used their software before, use it now, or are in some way related to Fiorano. If so, you should disclose that.

    As for your point about the other vendors, it is quite true .. in the JMS space, Progress/Sonic (for example) has participated in deceptive marketing similar to this benchmark. In fact, the benchmark used here is from a Sonic marketing campaign, I think.

    There is no "fastest," just the fastest for a given set of circumstances. Take JMS as one example -- you have message sizes, network topology, number of clients, servers, hardware differences, pub/sub vs. other approaches, transactionality, durability, etc. There are so many variables as to be mind-boggling just to compare JMS implementations.

    Most big companies have standardized on a specific JMS implementation already, so (for big companies) it's more a question of who plays the nicest with their existing messaging infrastructure than who is fastest.

    Reliability is also one of the most important attributes. The messaging systems first have to _never_ lose a message, and then they should hopefully be up 24x7 with no single point of failure.

    Then you measure throughput .. which isn't necessarily related to performance. In other words, the messaging infrastructure needs to handle huge amounts of traffic, or it's not worth building around.

    Only then do you worry about performance.

    Trust me, if you were only looking at raw perf, IBM MQ Series would have been thrown out of every place years ago ;-)

    I'm with Cameron on this one. Back in the early days of JMS and JCA, we built a JMS abstraction layer for different providers and worked with most of the standalone vendors and app server implementations. ASF and XA were the first places to look for non-compliance and bad behavior, and at the time, we only found two vendors that worked and implemented it correctly.

    A conformance suite for JMS would be more interesting than a performance suite, IMHO.

    I have a few friends who absolutely depend on MQSeries to handle some major load 24/7. One of them handles a constant stream of large messages 24/7 and another friend works at a bank. they handle thousands of messages/second 24/7 and they wouldn't consider moving to some other JMS.

    absolutely raw speed isn't all that useful if the server crashes :) under load. for what i do, understanding the scalability of a JMS server is much more important and lets me figure out how to build and manage an application.

    on the other hand, its easy to say that because i am a customer, my comments are going to be biased... there was a lot of testing done by us as well and fiorano came up as the best option... i guess every company has its own set of parameters from which it can decide..

    Brian, you're right that single end-to-end performance is no real measure of real world performance. When my team evaluated JMS options three years ago, we constructed a suite of tests that exercised a variety of simulated real-world scenarios with different message sizes and different traffic patterns across multiple publishers and subscribers. We started with a list of twelve vendors and tested for performance, standards-compliance and ease of management. We finally shortlisted Fiorano MQ and Sonic MQ and, in the end, selected Fiorano MQ.

    Fiorano, like other vendors, have worked hard to improve performance and 7.5 is quite a step up from 7.2 (which is what we have in production today - we'll be upgrading to 7.5 over the next few months).

    Naturally published benchmarks never tell the full story so you should always test products against the scenarios you expect to see in your environment.

    I will just say that - like Surya K - I've been very happy with Fiorano's product and their responsiveness over the last three years.

    I couldn't agree more Brian, From personal experiance Fiorano is very very fast. When you use lots of selectors (50+) on the same queue the whole thing grinds to a halt. You might argue that you should break the queues out but they specifically recommend against that. The second issue I have is XA transaction awareness. As we already know JMS is involved in (the?) major use that we find for justifying the overhead of XA. Fiorano requires that you back the Queue with an XA aware database. From my own highly unscientific testing 5000 messages onto a file backed queue in Fiorano takes 11 seconds. The same messages onto a queue backed by an idling remote Oracle database on the same network took 3 minutes and 47 seconds.

    Their tools are, IMHO, pretty poor too.

    Wow, this is one of the worst benchmarks I've ever seen. All other products were run in Evaluation Mode, while Fiorano was run in Production-Ready Mode.... That's just one blatant item....

    The two reports are almost identical in test design, configurations, and even the report format! The only obvious difference is this report includes EMS and WSMQ.

    We opted to not use Fiorano because they were a virtual company. A little marketing office in the U.S. and programmers all out of the states. Using Fiorano also seemed like like using a lesser know version of Linux. They were sending us code snipets to compile in with the server to achieve what we wanted to do.

    SonicMQ sent us a bundle which already did what we wanted to. On top of that they responded in hours not days.

    We also noticed through our internal benchmarks that Fiorano was a lot faster for smaller messages, but Sonic really took over with larger messages.

    Each of the tests suites below is tested for persistent(sync. write)/durable/transactional as well as non-persistent delivery, to see the difference between IO-bound and network-bound deliveries.

    We didn't test FioranoMQ, though.

    3. Publisher connections (pubconn): number of JMS connections of a publisher: 1,2,5,10

    9. Transaction batchsizes (batchsize): with transacted delivery, evaluating the performance impact of varying batchsizes: 1 (base line), 10, 100, 1000

    10. Number of destinations (numdest): tests the effect of using more than one destination to transfer messages between one publisher and one consumer: 1,2,5,10

    11. Destination type (desttype): the impact of using a queue instead of a topic

    12. Subscriber connections (subconn): number of JMS connections of a subscriber: 1,2,5,10

    13. Subscriber sessions (subsess): number of JMS subscriber sessions and threads: 1,2,5,10

    14. Durability (durability): the impact of using a durable subscription instead of a non-durable subscription

    15. Acknowledge mode (ackmode): tests the impact of using the standard JMS acknowledgment modes: automatic and client acknowledgement

    16. Client acknowledge batchsizes (clientacksize): when using Client Acknowledgement, what is the impact of varying the number of messages between individual acknowledgements? (using sizes of 1,100,1000)

    17. Slow subscribers (slowsub): what is the impact of a set of slow subscribers to one fast subscriber? Will they slow down the single fast subscriber? The following scenarios are tested: 1fast (the base line), 1fast+1slow, 1fast+4slow, 1fast+24slow

    18. JMS message selector (selector): what is the impact of a JMS message selector? Selecting 1 String (or Long) property out of 10 properties is tested.

    19. Scenario and Transaction Batchsize (scenario-batchsize): this two-dimensional test varies the scenarios 1-(1)-1, 1-(5)-1 and 1-(25)-1 as well as the batchsizes (1,10,100) leading to 9 individual tests.

    There are more than 800 individual tests to run (4 minutes each) and it takes about 3 days to finish just running each test once ... The chart-grahphs of latency and message rates take about 8MB.
