The Mobicents project has announced the release of an open-source implementation of the JAIN-SLEE 1.0 standard. JAIN-SLEE is a container standard much like EJB that is suited for a wide variety of event-oriented applications such as IP Telephony Servies, Distributed Interactive Simulation, monitoring and control.
 
Mobicents is supported by NIST Advanced Networking Technologies Division and by individual contributors with permission from the following organizations: University of Genoa, JBoss inc., PT Inovação and Vodafone R&D. We think Mobicents would form an excellent basis for research and evaluation of the SLEE standard. We hope you find this a useful piece of work and will join our efforts and contribute your ideas to take this project to the next phase. There are still many avenues for collaboration and contribution from industry and academia.

What do you think the opportunities are for integration between mobile technologies and enterprise technologies? Is there even a difference?

First, congratulations to the team on building a great open source project for the telecom space. And on achieving certification.

Based on feedback we hear in from our telecom users, JAIN/SLEE will be an importnat platform for the telco industry - and potentially beyond as voice, data, and multimedia merges.

Ivelin wrote up a nice blog that talks about the various different standards in this area, and the potential for SLEE.

I think that the next big wave in enterprise computing will be the convergence between traditional IT and telecommunications. There are several interesting technologies in this space, JAIN-SLEE is just one of these. But will the big operators bother to look for open source products when they are used to invest 100s of millions in HW? The possible market opportunity is for third party service providers which might be more price sensitive and willing to have the latest technology.

SLEE is not some abstruse technology for big player Telco operators with deep pockets. SLEE is applicable to a much wider set of applications. This project is about getting the technology out into the hands of the people. Naturally, the market will decide about success or failure as you point out and we hope for the best.

Is SLEE good for a game server?

SLEE is a great platform for multiplayer online games. There are several discussions in the community around SLEE+SIP based game platform (game control, messaging, voice & video). We are looking for the right contributor to lead a Mobicents Games sub-project.

Another area where SLEE is a good fit is day trading.

Yes, the title might be misleading. Mobicents is the first and only Open Source cerftified implementation of JAIN SLEE, but there are other certified implementations as well. Open Cloud Rhino and jNETx N(x) are two examples.
