I've never been real happy with debates about language features, I'd much rather implement them and try them out. For example, over christmas, Rémi Forax did an implementation of the ":=" declaration syntaxRémi's efforts inspired James to do a Christmas hack himself. However his kids scuttled those plans. James other idea, creating a project to allow people to attempt any language feature they may find interesting, was taken on by Peter von der Ahé. Peter is not quite finished. One suggest that James does make is that one could inject code into javac that analyizes the abstract syntax tree (AST). James has already done this with Jackpot which he describes as a GUI for the generates AST. Now that javac has been bundled into NetBeans we should expect more people like Rémi spending their free time to experiment with the language. Do you plan on hacking javac?
Blogs: Gosling's Christmas Hack
There have been a number of people experimenting with various aspects of Java (the langauge) since the source code has been open sourced. All this experimentation seems to sit well with James Gosling. In his blog he writes about how he wanted to create a "Kitchen Sink Langauge" website.
