Giving a Rich face-lift to an organization's websites can deliver such a superior user experience that quite possibly it can give the organization a clear edge over its competitors, but choosing the right RIA framework for your team is never an easy task. The frameworks, categories, and details presented in this article are not exhaustive by any means. Nice start but doesn't get into browser plugin version requirements, component library maturity, and general project critical mass. Flex is the bees knees but you are tied to a plugin version that some corporate clients don't support yet. No iPhone is a showstopper for me. GWT has a great foundation but still lacks a solid component library story. It's coming along but still needs to close the gap with Flex. Laszlo is this cool thing that bridges Flash versions and Javascript offerings. Still shouldn't you just pick one strategy and if so would you pick Laszlo then? What should really win out in the end is not relying on any of these frameworks and instead focusing on a solid XML/JSON service layer that supports usability concerns. as an example in the case of tablular data this means support for paging, filtering, and sorting in the service interface. It is a usability aspect or facet of a service. If you service supports it then the client framework is even thinner. -

GWT has a great foundation but still lacks a solid component library story.
SmartGWT is free and offers a top notch component library. It's becoming the defacto component library in the GWT world. http://www.smartclient.com/smartgwt/showcase/ -

According to both websites, SmartGWT uses an LGPL license and is based on the LGPL version of SmartClient. -

I am working on project of RIA frameworks evaluation and let me say that we have a lot of frameworks that claim to be RIA. These framework can be grouped in 3 major classes: 1- Plug-in based frameworks : in this class, we can put : a- Flash (with flex and AIR) b- Silverlight c- The new born JavaFx 2- Browser based frameworks: we can find ajax tools, libraries and frameworks: from Dojo, echo3. GWT, yahoo UI to BackBase, tibco general interface, and the list is so long 3- Java based framework (fat clients) used with Applet and java webstart technologies The evaluation should be based on criteria like: - UI richness - Performance (loading a table of 1000 record should not freeze browsers). - Scalability - Security - Portability - Maturity - Productivity
