  1. SmartGWT Pro/EE 1.2 Released (9 messages)

SmartGWT Pro & Enterprise Editions are built on SmartGWT LGPL and provide accelerated server side integration with SmartGWT's visual components. Version 1.2 of SmartGWT Pro and SmartGWT Enterprise has just been released. SmartGWT EE Showcase : http://www.smartclient.com/smartgwtee/showcase/ Download evaluation : http://smartclient.com/releases/smartgwtee-1.2.zip Sanjiv Jivan has written an excellent introduction to SmartGWT EE covering the key features in some detail. As noted in this post : "Fully functional CRUD screens, with inline editing, virtual pagination, type validation, ability to create new records, deletes, updates, advanced filtering capabilities, file export and upload can be build with as little as 25 lines of client side SmartGWT code, and a simple XML based DataSource descriptor file that lives on the server side. For the simple CRUD usecase zero lines of server side code is required to be written by a developer." The list of supported features is long but here are some of them : - client and server-side validation based on single declaration (a "DataSource") - forms, grids, trees, detail views, calendars, tile views and miller columns all share a single metadata model, so one declaration configures them all - a few simple lines of code enables all SmartGWT visual components to perform CRUD operations with your Java beans - zero lines of code for CRUD connectivity to SQL or Hibernate: do it all in a visual tool - queuing and batching of operations to enable multiple CRUD operations in one HTTP turnaround Feature comparisons between the LGPL, Pro and Enterprise editions, as well as summaries and samples for the Pro and Enterprise features, can be found here.

Not wanting to start a fight and nothing personal, but my experience with Sanjiv's paid service was awful and a total let down. He was running a project GWT-Ext(http://gwt-ext.com)-not sure if he still is- and had a GWT-Plus paid License which I bought and never really recouped my investment. So many answered questions even in the paid support forum. Ended up moving to GWT-Ext (http://extjs.com) and eventually to Vaadin ( http://vaadin.com)-which is great if you already know Java swing. So really, I wouldn't reach my wallet for this gentleman's services ------------------- BKabs-the one client you lost

From what I can see this is a Isomorphic product offering which is a real company that offers training and structured support. Looks like they have been around for quite a while. Its a shame if your technical evaluation of this product is based purely on some a personal score you have to settle or if you're upset that the gwt-ext project is no longer being further developed. And many of us know that the reason for this was the Ext license change from LGPL to GPL. Back to SmartGWT. This looks really promising and being able to built a CRUD screen without redundant layers of dao and service layers is quite appealing. Downloading it now to evaluate it
  4. SmartGwt is extremely bloated core library it self is 400 kb ...its not common for apps to reach application size 1 mb ..............so if want a bloated app or all your users are broadband then go ahead ...read this discussion for more details -> http://forums.smartclient.com/showthread.php?t=4690&highlight=bloated
  5. Your style of writing closely matches that of "codedude".............. The SmartGWT showcase that has some 200+ samples runs just fine and performance is good too. My customer base is definitely not on dialup.

can you show me one customer which uses Smartclient on popular high traffic website ? you your self say on your forum that you advocate the jquery for websites ....i guess your customer only use it on internal lan websites without worrying on about normal web issues ....i guess in that case they should you use flex or swing ....

they already told you on the forum you quoted: www.quickbooks.com sometimes, i wonder if people are all there...

Why not open source?? Flex community has similar product call Clear Data Builder from Farata System which does that same in Flex. I moved from GWT to Flex because no good UI API (that time) to build good interface. SmartClient looks good if they have open source it but everybody doesn't like it that way.

    Why not open source??
most of it is open source: http://code.google.com/p/smartgwt/ the enterprise version has full databinding to the back end. if you don't want this, it's not the end of the world to build it yourself on a bespoke basis. if you want support and the databinding out of the box, buy the pro license from isomorphic.

SmartClient is a company. It has to make money. Dual version is not an evil. The question is the LGPL version is good enough or not.
