The date is kind of arbitrary - "Ajax" existed before it was called that. And it is a bit of a misnomer - you see less XML and more JSON in this popular pattern. But, for your information, today is the 5th anniversary of the blog that launched a thousand Ajax apps. Jesse James Garrett, Doug Crockford, Justin Gehtland and others comment on the event.
In a blog entry posted on Feb 18, 2005, user interface expert Jesse James Garrett coined the term "Ajax" to describe a new Web paradigm that thrust JavaScript again into the forefront of Web application development. "Ajax" stood for "Asynchronous JavaScript and XML."
