News: Liferay Announces their Latest Release: Portal 6EE

  1. It's with great regret that I wasn't able to get down to San Francisco this week and attend the West Coast Liferay symposium. Much of the work I have done in the past was trying to figure out how to get portal servers and portal envirnoments to deliver the social and interactive experience to end users that was always promised, but never quite delivered. Of course, things have changed, and todays portal servers aren't what they used to be.

Liferay 6EE touts a number of new features, but it's the social interaction facilities that I think are the most promising. Some of those social interaction improvements include:

    • Enhanced, real-time activity tracking of user and group activity
    • Full suite of RSS-enabled and ratable Wikis, Blogs, and Forums
    • Familiar office tools including enterprise chat, a built-in mail client, personal and group calendars, and address books and contacts
    • Collaborative and team-driven content creation
    • OpenSocial support allowing Google Gadgets to run natively in Liferay
    • Full Social API framework with seamless integration with WCM

A number of 'feature previews' are available online, and if you're interested in what todays' portals can do, you should check them out: http://www.liferay.com/6ee
