Those Hursley kids are something else, aren't they, what with their 'Pi' in the sky ideas of doing crazy things like effectively running the WebSphere behemoth on a credit card sized computer with 256 megs of RAM and a 700Mhz processor. Like that would ever happen.

A WebSphere Makeover

It looks like things are changing for the better over at IBM. With a little OSGi magic and a highly modular approach to their design, the WebSphere folks have come up with a web profile that can load in seconds, which is a concept that runs contrary to anything previously associated with the words 'Web' and 'Sphere.'

Now tell me that they've come up with an administrative console that supports the back button and doesn't trigger a full page refresh every time you trigger a request-response cycle and I'll be sold!

Same here... thats because article doesnt mention the $300+ blue suit consultants that come with the any IBM product. ORacle falls in the same category. Thank god for apache.

Too many people remember the old WebSphere and will dismiss this article without even giving it a look, except maybe to make some negative comment based on their outdated preconceptions.

License cost is still an issue, but this product definitely looks to have addressed ease-of-use (2 minute setup time) and performance (sub 10 second startup).

Congratulations on the continued improvements in WebSphere, and the latest release. It's been very exciting to see a lot of investment in the various Java EE application servers to address developer productivity, including Java EE 6 support, faster startup time and deployment, etc. I'm assuming this is your "liberty profile"?

I think you have me confused with someone else.  I'm not part of the WebSphere team; I just find the regular anti-WebSphere comments tiresome and not really reflective of current reality.

I do agree WebSphere has an important place in server-side Java that a lot of people don't fully appreciate. Perhaps folks like yourself can convince IBM that WebSphere/Java EE is still something they need to focus their R&D dollars towards instead of taking it for granted. Honestly, the recent levels of technical involvement in the JCP by IBM is very dissapointing (albeit they do support the Apache Java EE projects somewhat indirectly). That didn't always used to be the case...

And to be even more clear, I don't work for IBM.  The company I work for is an IBM customer.  I use the product in my day-to-day work. 

And, for what it's worth, I agree.  IBM doesn't seem to be focusing as much on certain aspects of core Java EE as I would like.

Fast, small memory foot print, cheap with thirdpaty vendor support etc .......

 So you are saying that IBM webSphere is now getting to what Tomcat was 10 yrs ago ? :) .

Except for those major government clients like State of california very few organizations really go for IBM websphere....oh unless ofcourse  the sales manager and the CIO are golf buddies. Then all bets are off. Blue suits everywhere selling snake oil.

 Oure Tomcat or Spring Tc or JOBss... thats it.. you dont need to look any further.

Congratulations to the WebSphere team -- I must say I am more than a bit impressed. With the impressive brainpower/know-how at IBM, this is the sort of thing IBM should have done many years ago. It is good to see WebSphere is being seen as needing serious rework.

To me, the biggest issue with WebSphere is what version of Java does it support. So what version does this support?

From what I've read, the Liberty profile can run on everything up to Java 7, and has been written so that it can run on non-IBM JVMs.

Liberty seems nice, but OMG why does IBM need to invent anoter profile that isn't compatible with either the existing Web- or Full Profiles?

Liberty Profile is really interesting, but this is a show stopper for us.

At first, I'm very happy with the born of Liberty profile. After 3 hrs to download, install and test this profile, some bad news for websphere community (good news for open source, oracle...):

- Comparing to older websphere profile: Liberty is start up very fast, but not faster than tomcat and weblogic dev environment

- At runntime: Liberty is very very slow, high CPU consume.

- There are many many errors, especially in Data source configuration.

As an expert, consultant with ~10 year experience of working with Websphere, Tomcat and < 2 years with Weblogic, I am very glad to state that Websphere is a sorry-as solution (both product and development environment, especially in performance and hard-to-config).

Very sorry to our customers who using websphere after take advice from us.
