basically http tunneling refers to using HTTP as a transaport for another protocol.... typically HTTP is used for exchanging HTML data, but it can be utilized as a transport for binry data or JRMP (RMI), or any other proprietary protocol. This gives one the advantage of easy passage through corp firewalls, since port 80 for http is generally open. One can also take advantage of http security transparantly.... the drawback involved is the the verbose nature of this protocol.
