One day people will not assume everyone knows what every single abv is

Anyways Jive was one of the best Java forums out there, so I'd like to think the messenger will be in the same league. Will definately be checking this out.

    I apologize for the acronym.

XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol. It is a set of streaming XML protocols for the exchange of messages, presence, and other structure information (such as RDF documents) originally developed by the Jabber Software Foundation. The protocol became a standard that was formalized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) under the name XMPP.

SIP stands for Session Initiation Protocol and is also an IETF standard. SIMPLE is a protocol for Messaging and Presence built on top of SIP. These are competing standards.

As far as comparing the standards, and determining which standard has a brighter future, that is something I can't attest to. Only time will tell. One thing is for certain though - we've only started to see the impact of presence and location based services. XMPP, Jive's Smack Library, and Jive's Messaging Server create a great foundation for incorporating presence in you're applications.

P.S. When in doubt about an acronym turn to google
