One thing I've thought about is a simplified syntax that's structurally equivalent to the way that most people use XML that can easily be transformed into XML and therefore making use of all the tools that exist for it. I kind of jumped in this discussion because using a scripting language instead of ant XML files is an attractibve option and a good way to introduce scripting languages.
