We have some solution architects where I work. What seems to be happening over time (about 2 years now) is that the solution architects are losing their skillsets and their overall technical mojo through lack of use. So in the beginning (2005 or so)...

It's also important to ignore titles on resumes. They are useless unless you worked at that company and know what those titles mean....

I think there's definitely a higher level of design that must take place, especially in an environment like the one I work in now.

The main goal of a solution architect is to feed his/her ego with the minimum useful work possible. The title helps....
