J2EE Packaging and Deployment

The J2EE specification provides guidelines for the structuring and the creation of J2EE applications and one of the major ones is related to packaging. Individual specifications provide guidelines for the packaging of individual components such as EJBs, JSP pages, and servlets. The J2EE specification then dictates how these heterogeneous components are themselves to be packaged together. This chapter provides a thorough analysis of the J2EE packaging mechanism. We will focus on the relationships that these components have within an EAR file, and the process involved in building EAR files.

Latest appserver market analysis: BEA 41%, IBM 31%, IPlanet 13%
Independent research by Gartner Dataquest shows that BEA holds 41% of the new direct license revenue in the application server software market in 2000, a figure that is 10 share points higher than its closest competitor. BEA now has confirmation of its first place market position by every major industry analyst firm tracking the application server market.

JBoss open source app. server integrates with Cocobase O/R
JBoss Group LLC, a commercial company regrouping developers from the JBoss Open Source application server, today announced their decision to broaden their offerings for the enterprise level developer with CocoBase Enterprise O/R, an object-to-relational mapping tool, optimized for EJB.

Rivals encroach on Oracle's database lead
Oracle is facing the biggest threat ever to its database dominance, as IBM, Microsoft and new competitors chisel away at its market share. Oracle, in its most recent earnings report, said database sales fell 8 percent overall, whereas IBM's and Microsofts revenues have grown 36% and 45% in the last quarter, respectively.

Gartner: Microsoft's J#.Net will be ignored
A new tool from Microsoft aimed at attracting Java developers to its .Net Web services plan, Visual J#.Net, will (according to Gartner analyst Mark Driver) confuse the adoption of C#, Microsoft's answer to Java. Moreover, it will ultimately be ignored by most Java platform developers.

JSR 153: Enterprise Java Beans 2.1 posted to JCP
The Enterprise JavaBeans 2.1 specification extends the existing Enterprise JavaBeans 2.0 specification with new features, including support for JAXM message-driven beans, enhancements to EJB QL to support aggregate and other operations, support for linking of messaging destinations, support for web services usages within EJB, and a container-managed timer service.

Microsoft to release Java version of .NET?
Microsoft silently made a download that added Java language support to .NET available on Sunday, but then quickly pulled it off. A release note, curiously dated October 11 - this coming Thursday - describes it as a beta of "Visual JSharp .NET Version 7.0." The J# product doesn't compile .class bytecode, or support Sun's RMI or JNI.
