Objects, Aspects, Web services, SOA. It seems that new technologies come and go like fashions these days - every one is always talking about the latest trend. In the TSS cartoon, Trends in Enterprise Development, the latest technologies make their way down a fashion show runway.

I think they are all hot in their own way, but your right I will probably end up dumping all of them and moving on in the end. I wonder if women programers do a better job of commiting to a framework? -

At a first glance ...
... MDA looks kinda old-fashioned with hair like Krystle Carrington from Dynasty. However, that hairstyle comes back every couple years, just like the idea of MDA.
... Webwork looks like a whore (isn't everyone using it?)
... AOP, one hot chick, I'm signing on to that if this is what you get.
... WebServices doesn't really appear to be the woman which solves all my problems.
... SOA needs to show more legs before I would decide to run with her.
... IoC seems confused. Identity crisis. Am I IoC or Dependency Injection? That Fowler dude fo*ked me up. -

Note naive look in her eyes...
... Webwork looks like a whore (isn't everyone using it?)
And these who is not - are old farts. They tell you about
nigth shifts on IBM/360 floor where they flirt with very similar
girls, the same two eyes, the same two legs....
... AOP, one hot chick, I'm signing on to that if this is what you get.
Ha-ha! and you will get empty proxy without even clue that couple of
studs intercept your actions. Not you , they are really getting meat.
... WebServices doesn't really appear to be the woman which solves all my problems.
you pervert!
... SOA needs to show more legs before I would decide to run with her.
All black girls have good legs! The question is if you can handle it!
... IoC seems confused. Identity crisis. Am I IoC or Dependency Injection? That Fowler dude fo*ked me up.
Think out of container! It is about role play: now you control her,
now she controls you... you thing you are master, but as soon as you open
access to your privates , you will be auto wired with
bunch of dependAnts before you make a word! Her look is
intentionally submissive, but she is
smater than you are!
Have a nice day :-))

Sigh... and people wonder why there aren't more women in IT...
That said, I wouldn't mind testing Miss IoC outside of her container... :-)

... Too much make-up!
I'm sure they would look absolutely marvelous without all these artifices and their willing to seduce.
And by the way all that make-up will leave lipstick tracks if one want to "kiss" one of them. My wife won't appreciate - even if it's springtime -

Hey. It is a fashion show. Not a street corner. Not that I would know about either one.
Like any of us "geeks" would have chance with a model. Now if this GuitarSide ... . -

Do you personally dismiss every innovation as a fad? Do you know how to recognize a lasting innovation? How many years old was Java when you finally adopted it? Did you deliberately choose Java, or was it assigned to you by management? Is technological evolution possible without evangelists and early adopters? -

Seems to me commercial software development is all about damage control. Budgets are cut to the bone and developers are facing incredible time pressures. Keeping abreast of new technologies can be challenging.
Lofty architectural models are great but they need to translate into the realm of practicality or they will fade into obscurity. Most companies don't send employees off for training before they use something these days. Imagine learning Rational Rose on your own and factoring it into the schedule! Each developer or architect must carefully weigh the time to learn a new technology against the benefit it will provide.
The emergence of various technology buzz is all about authors trying to stake their claim in the technology frontier. If it clicks, they are famous. If not, try again until something clicks...grin. -

Seems to me commercial software development is all about damage control. Budgets are cut to the bone and developers are facing incredible time pressures.
It's a moment we've been eargerly awaiting. Software development gets a natural market economy. Finally time- and labor- saving techniques matter. Unlike the glamorous decade before, the emphasis isn't on interoperability and portability -- those are conquered problems. Time-to-market, fewer defects, and de-skilling are once again back in the foreground. Why? Second chances are too rare to hope for now. "Damage control" (your words) or "comfort zone" (mine), it's all relative to one's desire to humbly pass savings on to consumers.
It's no coincidence these hot new technologies (MDA, IoC) aren't buzzwords aimed at consumers. The trick new stuff is strictly for developer survival. They're coping mechanisms. They make no attempt to extend the reach of software or create new markets. These new technologies exist merely to lend strength to players in a market of fixed size.
The irony and hope is that once society discovers how cheap and timely quality software can get, then a bigger swipe at brick-and-mortar business can begin. -
