IBM Rational has announced plans to standardize its suite of automated software quality tools on the Hyades open source platform and is unveiling concurrently a software quality campaign dubbed "Continuously Ensure Quality," or CEQ.
What is Hyades?
Hyades is an integrated test, trace and monitoring environment, based on Eclipse, that provides standards, tools and tool interoperability across the test process. more

with a title like that it should be accompanied by a five year plan from the Great Leader to double the output of code from the code mines. Sounds like a slogan from one of the old Eastern Block socialist workers republics. -

Every so often some group comes up with an inane Methodology or Process like TQM or CMM and now CEQ that will end up being the management buzz word for a few years. Probably there will be groups (maybe IBM in this case) that will issue a certification for being CEQ compliant. Certain management types will eat it up and instead of following common sense development processes, more projects will grind to a halt while they send all the staff to CEQ training. Project meetings will then be about "how are we progressing towards CEQ compliance" and rarely about "how in the bloody hell is our software project going".
Vast quantities of documents will be produced using vast quantities of money paid to endless armies of IBM or Accenture or Cap Gemini consultants. And instead of helping a company create, manage, and utilize its information assets, we'll have yet another waste-of-money-dead-end project that keeps these assets fractured and unusable.
That's how I take it, anyway ;-)

No freak'in way?!?! Quality from IBM? LOL!
Isn't Hades another word for Hell? Of course, IBM just spelled it wrong...
I wonder if this crap is coming from IGS? If not, they should get some serious training for those guys in CEQ. They definately need it. -

In Greek Mythology the Hyades were sisters of Hyas (some say his daughters). They were turned into the constellation Hyades after greiving for Hyas who was killed while hunting, variously by a a lion, a boar, or a Lybian lioness. They are also sometime attributed as being the nymphs who raised Dionysus, and also sometimes regarded as a group of Maenads. They are also usually related to the Pleiades.
"For Hyas his mother wept, and for Hyas his sad sisters, and Atlas, soon to bow his neck to the burden of the pole, yet the love of the sisters exceeded that of both parents: it won for them a place in the sky, but Hyas gave them their name." [Ovid, Fasti 5.170]

Does this mean that IBM is committed to fixing the Rational software? ;-)
(I could not resist, having been bitten repeatedly by bugs in several different pieces of Rational's "suite.")

Last year I was on a contract where they had just installed Rational ClearCase. As many of you may know, ClearCase is not a very intuitive application to use. The two person administration team couldn't get it to work right so the company called for a Rational consultant to come on site and get it straightened out. The Rational consultant scratched his head for a month at $150 per hour. He couldn't figure it out and was using Rational support himself! The IBM/Rational 'expert' ended up being on site for at least three months. True story.
I think they would have been better off by staying with Visual SourceSafe and coming up with a decent management strategy.

Atria's ClearCase is the best version control system ever invented (and patented). When it comes to branching, merging, and directory versioning, there's no rival. -

I'd love to know just how many of you are using Eclipse? So what's the beef about IBM pushing the Rational toolset down the same road.
As for the usual stories about consultants and "difficult" software, well they always come from the envious. VSS over Clearcase, yup a noddy developer might say that but for true enterprise change management no chance. Bugs in Rational Suite Enterprise, no, never. Get real it's a huge toolset and of course there's bugs but you still can't beat it for integration and that is what the enterprise shops want. And no I'm not IBM/Rational I'm just a realist.
