Calvin Austin has published "Go, Geronimo, Go" on the SpikeSource wiki detailing their Geronimo stack (a preconfigured install of Geronimo). The walkthrough includes deployment and startup, configuration of datasources, and deployment of web applications.
It's a good introduction to the basic features of Geronimo, applicable beyond the SpikeSource stack (although the SpikeSource stack is handy, allowing easy configuration for Derby, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.)
Walkthroughs like this are horribly useful for developers and deployers, providing simple step-by-step instructions for common tasks. Most containers have things like this available somewhere on the web; if you know of a good one, send editor at theserverside dot com a url and we'll tabulate them somewhere.

Cory, I checked the link again after seeing this message, and it worked for me. What error are you getting? Which browser are you using? -

The link works for me too. Perhaps you might want to copy and paste the url in your browser instead.

Firefox 1.07
I did paste the link and tried IE also. When I did get through I got one of their pages that said there was a SQL Server DB error. Oh well. It was not to be this morning. It would have been interesting to see if the install and config was easier than JBoss... -

Oh, look at that a GUI based configuration utility. Rats, I much prefer to edit XML files.
It would have been nice to see a little more. Something useful like a a JMS queue.

This may not be the best place for this post, but can anybody tell me if they have successfully built Geronimo 1.0 from the source? Geronimo uses maven to build the project, which evidently means its impossible for anyone to build it besides the developers.
I have tried reading the BUILDING.txt file that comes with Geronimo, but it didn't help.
If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated.

Rob,
I have built successfully.
Anyone should be able to build Geronimo assuming they have the correct software installed.
Can you please send a mail to the geronimo user list (see http://geronimo.apache.org/mailing.html for subscription information) and tell us the following:
* Are you using the 1.0 final release or a release candidate?
* What platform are you building on (Windows XP, Linux..)?
* Do you want to build from the command line or were you wanting to use an IDE to debug etc?
The Geronimo community would be glad to help.
Regards,
John Sisson

Hi John,
Thanks for your response. I'll post an email to your geronimo mailing list, but thought I might respond here to just in case anyone is having the same problems.
Q: Are you using the 1.0 final release or a release candidate?
A: 1.0 Final release.
Q: What platform are you building on (Windows XP, Linux..)?
A: Windows 2000
Q: Do you want to build from the command line or were you wanting to use an IDE to debug etc?
A: Command line. The BUILDING.txt file says to use Maven 1.0.2 or later and use JDK 1.4.x. So I set my path to the bin directory of Maven and set JAVA_HOME appropriately. Then run Maven from the geronimo directory. I figure that is all I should need to do.
The errors I am getting are unsatisfied class dependencies for a file called GenerateServiceXml.java. The dependencies are actually in one of the maven jars, but it doesn't seem to be in the classpath. I did try renaming the file to ...java.bak and ran it again. It got much further, but other class compilations depend on GenerateServiceXml.java, so it blew up again.

Trying to access the Developer Zone from the SpikeSource website gave me an error. Does this happen with anyone else?
Probably explains why the wiki page was unavailable.

The URL is working now. Thanks for hanging in there, we had to code around the gforge download utility and to make things even more complicated I was a new dad the day before the serverside link so my internet access and sleep was limited.
Geronimo has got off to a good start, I hope my notes and download makes testing it out even easier -

Hi
A little bit off topic (but not by much I hope) : is there someone behind the Apache Fondation ?
I mean, does the Fondation need money to, let's say, pay the developpers and, if so, who provides this money ? Are there so big backup like IBM ? If so, do they have their word in the way the money is spent ?
Thanks in advance

- Only individuals are behind the Apache Software Foundation.
- The Apache Software Foundation doesn't pay developers.
But you better read http://www.apache.org/foundation/how-it-works.html for the compelete story. -

Thanks for the answer.
I don't find this page explicit in terms of "how the Apache Fondation is financed" and such nasty details.
