News: KonaKart - free java-based eCommerce / shopping cart

  1. DS Data Systems UK Ltd. is pleased to announce the release of KonaKart v, a free java shopping cart application that provides everything that store owners need to sell their products over the Internet. KonaKart includes an extensive set of online shopping cart features to satisfy the needs of both online shoppers and store owners alike. KonaKart is an open Java / AJAX / JSP / XML based solution with easy to use java APIs and a SOAP Web Service interface for the ultimate in connectivity. The most significant new features of the release are: 1) Introduction of AJAX enabled One Page Checkout functionality. Existing customers go directly to the checkout screen where they can add coupons, change shipping methods, payment methods etc. and immediately see the updated total order amount without a screen refresh. New customers can add address details as part of the checkout process. They don't have to go through a separate registration process. 2) Introduction of Advanced Search Engine Optimization (SEO). You have full control over which SEO features to activate. KonaKart allows you to define multi-lingual templates in order to write product information (name, model, manufacturer, category) into the URL, the window title, the meta description and the meta keywords. 3)Support for DB2 and MS SQL Server databases. The KonaKart download package now supports MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, DB2 and MS SQL Server databases. KonaKart can be downloaded from the KonaKart web site at http://www.konakart.com/downloads.php and more information can be found at http://www.konakart.com

  2. I have found plenty of PHP shopping carts (Zen-Cart, osCommerce, etc...) but only one Java shopping cart, that being KonaKart. Also, KonaKart may be free but it's not entirely open source, only select modules are open source.

I think tht more number of opensource shopping carts are developed in php bcoz of cheap hosting prizes. people who wants to start wid opensource cart may prefere php based carts over a java based shopping cart. Costly hosting is a reason which prevents java from being adopted for small budget projects. sudhir http://www.jyog.com
  7. Free Java vs. PHP Shopping cart[ Go to top ]

Price is one reason (though you can find Java hosts for under $10/month, e.g. lunarpages.com). But another reason is just complexity. Developing and customizing shopping carts isn't brain surgery, especially since PayPal does the most critical part. Yes, Java is more robust, has better MVC capability, and is more enjoyable to program with. But if you're a Java programmer, PHP takes under a week to get fully comfortable with. And you'll find yourself much more productive in a space where you just frankly don't have the luxury of time to waste writing interfaces and thinking about dependency injection.
  8. "Free" vs. "free"[ Go to top ]

Is the entire thing "free", as in beer, with a subset "Free" as in speech? Or is there a portion that must be purchased? I expect that most people care very little about the accessibility of the source code, as long as they don't have to pay anything in order to use it.

Yes, KonaKart is completely free to use. Just download it and you have the full product with no forms to fill out or licences to buy. There are no usage restrictions whatsoever such as limited numbers of products or customers etc. There are no tricks or catches as you sometimes get with "free as in beer" software; with KonaKart there is nothing left out that you have to buy. It is possible to purchase support contracts for guaranteed service levels but this is optional.
