Web tier: servlets, JSP, Web frameworks: Can I read a Microsoft Excel file from Java? If so, how?

Problem is that DSN you need to have installed in your ODBC Admin. This is not very useful because you don´t always know the name of the Excel file from the start.

  4. Just an alternative idea...
Sometimes you can get rid of processing xls files and use their XML presentation. I guess all MS Office products can use XML files instead of their corresponding proprietary formats (in your case XLS). So you can use any Java XML parser in order to manipulate Excel sheets as long as you keep them in XML.
Try "Save As ..." in XML.
I don't know if this approach is applicable to your problem but an idea more doesn't hurt :-)
