That was the Year that was as we know it at this point in time. Here is a look back at some of the popular - well, much visited - threads of discussion on this site in 2009. 1-JPA comparison: Hibernate, Toplink, OpenJPA, Eclipselink Posted by: Santiago Rodriguez on January 19, 2009 Someone writes a relatively simple program which executes some queries and inserts in a MySQL database through JPA. Posts about it. The conclusion - benchmarks are fun! http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=53142 2-New Article: Java EE 6 Overview Posted by: Nuno Teixeira on February 02, 2009 The U.S. got a new president, friend Reza Rahman provided an overview on Java EE 6, and 2009 formally started. http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=53459 3-Avoid Java transactions pitfalls with Spring Posted by Frank Charles on February 06, 2009 Using code examples from the Spring Framework and the Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) 3.0 specification, author Mark Richards looked at all-too-common mistakes. Are they really pitfalls? Should they be understood more than avoided? It is a perfect ponder, and fodder for comment. http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=53529 4-Demystifying Caching in Hibernate Posted by: Alois Reitbauer on February 19, 2009 Hibernate performance problems considered. After mystification comes demystification. This, like other treads, does not continue in a straight line. http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=53716 5-Niney-seven Things Every Software Architect Should Know Posted by: John Davies on February 26, 2009 It's rumoured, writes Davies, to be difficult to get a software architect to put something down on paper but imagine getting 50 or so of them to write something clever. Imagine you do that and then the TSS.com Java community deconstructs it! http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=53819 6-IBM in talks to buy Sun Microsystems Posted by: Peter Mularien on March 18, 2009 Uh, this didn't happen. But the rumor spurred a rash of comments. In the end, truth was stranger than fiction. http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=54007 7-Google App Engine for Java: TSS First Look Posted by: Eugene Ciurana on April 08, 2009 Google finally bit the Java bullet, and Eugene Ciurana was there to report. Happy New Year, Eugene! Anyone want to buy some Python books? http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=54215 8-Ten good reasons to look for something better than Java Posted by: Mario Fusco on July 14, 2009 Did we really run this? Must have been a Scala-wag on the desk that day. But, even though Java is clearly the final stage of human evolution, there are naysayers, and they make the world more interesting, let's face it! http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=55185 9-GlassFish v3 and Java EE 6 Released Posted by: eduardo pelegri-llopart on December 11, 2009 Is the GlassFish half-filled or half-way-out the door? Sun with flourish ahead of closure of its purchase by Oracle has released the Java Platform Enterprise Edition 6 and GlassFish Enterprise Server v3. http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=58858 Why are there 9? So you can chime in. What would you add? What do you think was notable in Java in 2009? Any prognostications on the Future? Tell it on TheServerSide.com. Let the community know.Threaded Messages (11)

You forgot all the threads where the JBoss or JEE 6 guys complain about things spring guys say then when the spring guys explain, the JBoss or JEE 6 guys say it is unfair that they are being picked on. -

John, For the record, I have no problems with discussions that are purely technical - I'll be happy to carry on such a discussion until the cows come home. I have every problem with folks attempting character assassinations on people with opinions they don't like or spreading FUD about Java EE. I'll defend against that today or any other day with anyone. Period. Cheers, Reza -

I guess they are more interested in slandering me and Gavin because we don't think Spring is "end all be all" or asking questions about the concrete reason they didn't go the CDI route, beyond "it's too hard" and "we can mind-read all the Spring developers in the World and they said they didn't need it" :-). Cheers, Reza

So why SS opted not to vote on ballot?
Ahem...keeping things on a technical note, I am still very keen on being enlightened to the reasons behind the absentee ballot. Cheers, Reza P.S.: BTW, I still don't buy the reasons behind not adopting CDI, but I'll live with it for now. As I've noted elsewhere, there are some positive aspects to this both from a personal and industry, after all... -

2009 was, without doubt, the year of the "Frank Charles" automated posting bot. This ingeneous software was enabled at intervals during the year by IBM and managed to contribute 54 pieces of news in 2009, without once replying to a single question posted by users about the provided news items. This deserves special recognition, and IBM are to be congratulated. :-) -

Lol, is it really a bot (there are some unconfirmed insider informations about it), or just blind guess? =)
