The whole Maven dependency management idea that promotes build time POMs to the repository is flawed IMO because it ties versions of the dependencies to the version of the main artifact (when ranges are not used ). But you also need Ant if you want to build an Ant project no? If you only want binaries, Maven can produce archives just like Ant can.

You have to manually download and install stuff like the servlet API or the Java Persistence API. That stuff can be a real hassle and a lot of folks have complained about it.
