SSL data encryption is handled on the web server, not in the servlet. The servlet running on the application server (i.e. Tomcat) talks to the browser/client via the web server. The webserver talks https back and forth to the client. The servlet has nothing to do with it.
To figure out how to enable SSL on Tomcat, read the SSL-HowTo in your Tomcat documentation. It's pretty easy.
