I have a project here which is using a vendor developed J2EE app with which we’re encountering severe performance issues. One of the things that I’ve picked up on going through log files etc. is that they are using a lot of API’s deprecated in 1.4. I’ve always avoided this in my own production code but was interested to know whether developers on TSS thought this was a real issue or not?
I know this is not the most exciting question in the world but I am surprised that noone has an opinion on it.
My feelings are that since a deprecated API is, by definition, no longer likely to be optimised, the use of a number of deprecated API calls is likely to have a detrimental effect on performance. The vendor says that they are using the deprecated calls because existing customers are on older Java versions. Views and opinions on this would be very welcome!
