News: April Fools: Microsoft Acquires TheServerSide.com

  1. Microsoft and TheServerSide.com announced the two companies have entered into a definitive agreement for Microsoft to acquire TSS at a price of approximately $1 billion in cash, the largest such acquisition since rival IBM purchased Rational last year. As of today, a new staff or editors, developers, and admins have taken over at TSS.

The move is expected to cause J2EE developers to switch to .NET en masse, and is part of Microsoft's overall strategy to dominate the enterprise development space. "The key to controlling peoples opinions is to control the media, much like the relationship between CNN and the U.S. government", says Greg Purty, Microsoft Marketing Commando. "We only get so much mileage out of paid forum participants like Rolf Tollerud. Slashdot - you're next!"

The site will slowly be ported to .NET, and from Linux to Windows Server 2003. "We're going to use the new 'generate web portal' button in Visual studio that takes in a .NET revenue projection sheet and outputs a complete .NET developer portal, down to the articles and all", said TSS' new development team.

Excitement is the word that sums up the feelings of TheServerSide development team. "I'm going to take a vacation, like the Orion guys", said Floyd Marinescu, Director of the site. "Afterwards, I think I'll buy the country of Canada". With similar sentiments, TSS Chief Architect Dion Almaer has finally settled in London. After looking around for "the right place" in Islington, this buyout has enabled him to buy Buckingham Palace (poor Queenie). TSS Linux Guru, Neven C, has purchased an island, and named it "LinuxLand". To enter the land you need to prove that your laptop is only running Linux.

    About TheServerSide.com
TheServerSide .NET community is the independent Micro$oft development community, with over 250,000 converted J2EE professionals. For more information, visit Microsoft.com.

  40. jokes can kill ![ Go to top ]

    Floyd,

You shouldn't make crazy killing jokes like this anymore. Someone
    might get a heartattack, indeed.

Please delete it after 1st april.

BTW I have read that someone really died from a heartattack when some of early Micro$oft programms displayed "Tree of evil gives bitter fruits, now trashing programm disk". The programm had dicided that it's not licensed.

I dont know if it's "urban legend" or not.

But nowdays... if you upgrade your's PC hard drive than Windows 2k becomes unbootable and you can say byebye to your data on HTFS partition, if you are not
a geek that can read it from hdd. And noone has died from this, as far as I know.

  60. same here[ Go to top ]

Same here, caught unawares. It even made sense since I know that MS is hiring J2EE people for its .NET Evangelist teams..
  61. Floyd,
You really fooled me with this one, though $1 billion is very good price that make me consider it seriously.
Oh boy! it's like the ultimate nightmare come true or even apt description would be like apocalypse...
    Don't even dream about it.
  62. Hehe... if you think that $1Billion is a good price to purchase
TSS perhaps I could interest you in some swampland in Florida ;-)
That was the very first thing that tipped me off to it not being a
true story. I don't have the appropriate knowledge to know for sure but I would
guess that TSS couldn't even sell for $30million, and certainly no
way more than $100million, though I can't think of what they've got that's
    worth anywhere near that much.

There's still time Floyd, bump down that price, I'm sure there's still many folks
that haven't read the story yet :-)
  63. Well, we didn't REALLY want to give people heart attacks. :)
  64. I do not understand, why cannot Floyd open another site dedicated to .NET? (TheServerSide.net - do you own that too?), that would be nice! An inssurance against the future. You never know whats going to happen, look at what happened to Javalobby!

    (About Javalobby)
"I've noticed less active participation in the forum for some long time now.."

“Gone are the days when average response per thread was about 35. This has droped to about 8 now. I want answers. If you have one please don't hesitate to throw it out here.”

“Those are my thoughts. I would love to improve Javalobby and find some way to bring back the general excitement that Java had behind it. Frankly, I've noticed a general decline in Java forums around the web. Does no-one have something really new and unique that they are doing with Java that can give us a spark?”

Actually, the domain name "theserverside.net" is already registered for Floyd Marinescu!
  66. Rolf,

You know you did a whois lookup on theserverside.net and Floyd does own it. Do you KNOW ANYTHING ELSE about the possibilities of a dedicated .Net site??? I am in favor of going to one place theserverside.xxx to get my daily dosage of .net and java news...

That's a good question, really -- how can you estimate the worth of a community site? If MS really had bought TSS, folks would just set their bookmarks to the next TSS and continue business-as-usual... We'd still have Rolf, TQ, Cameron and other regular posters, just in a different website. How much would MS be willing to pay for causing that "much" trouble?

  103. Hi,

If the message about takeover of TheServerSide.com company by Microsoft is true, then we guys over here at Chennai, India are really shocked about the happenings. As of date, your site had been the prime site of reference for Java/J2EE Professionals. You guys got into fame with Matering EJB2 PDF written by Ed Roman. Thanks a lot for the wonderful support and guidance given by you guys.

If the thread is associated with April Fool's Day, its really pitiable to see such a silly act from a reputed company like you. How could this happen in your forum. If this had been a news floating around on some other site, then its ok. I would request the Forum Administrator to be more Professional.

I dont like to throw much words to Floid because no word can touch that treacherous and foolish guy who believe a j2ee comunity is worth of only 1 billion $.I am a J2ee developer as well as a dotnet developer.I believe that this decission from MS has once again exposed the fact that since it has yet not been able to come up with robust enterprise component architecture built into dotnet rather than exposing COM+ with much overhead, much of which they are surreptitiously phasing out,MS is trying to avail the experience of ejb developers to build up their component technology from the scratch.
